PHNOM PENH: Prime Minister Hun Sen had a virtual meeting with Myanmar military leader, Min Aung Hlaing, on Wednesday afternoon, to discuss the situation in Myanmar since his official state visit to the country earlier this month. During the meeting, Prime Minister Hun Sen reminded the military leader to remain patient and honor his commitment to implement the Five-Point Consensus of ASEAN.
He further stated that it is necessary for Myanmar to facilitate the ASEAN Special Envoy of the Chair to visit Myanmar for the first time, to be very patient in maintaining the ceasefire, and to join ASEAN in ensuring the provision of citizens' assistance in Myanmar.
The Minister Delegate Attached to the Prime Minister, Kao Kim Hourn, stressed to reporters after the meeting between the Prime Minister and General Min Aung Hlaing that the Prime Minister specifically requested this call to make sure the Myanmar military leader pays attention to the appeal on this point.
The meeting between Prime Minister Hun Sen and Min Aung Hlaing this afternoon follows renewed violence between the military and armed rebel forces in Myanmar’s Rakhine state, which has forced tens of thousands of people to flee their homes.
So far, two ASEAN countries, Indonesia and Malaysia, have expressed their desire to maintain their representation of Myanmar if there is no crisis with the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus for Myanmar. This means that Myanmar’s spot in the ASEAN Summit will be left open or will have non-political representatives in attendance.
